OK Bazaars stays ahead of its rivals

OK BAZAARS is the retail store that enjoys the highest level of spontaneous awareness, and has been since 1995. It's level of awareness has always been 31% or higher, well ahead of its nearest rival - Pick 'n Pay in '95 and '96 and Checkers in '97 and this year.

Although Shoprite/Checkers has been trading under a combined name for several years, this has not settled into the minds of consumers. They continued to be mentioned separately, with Shoprite this year ranked in seventh position, one up from last year.

As has been the case since 1992, only food and clothes-related retailers are mentioned on the Top 10 list - not surprising as these shops provide for consumers' most basic needs.

The same Top 10 retailers which were top-of-mind last year are tops again, although in a different order. Pep Stores, which last year made the Top 10 for the first time by dislodging Hyperama from its No 9 ranking in 1995 and 1996, lost the most ground this year - down from No 6 to No 9.
