New CD holds 800 times more data

AN ELECTRICAL engineer at Princeton University in the US has created a CD that can hold up to 800 times more data than a conventional disc. Stephen Chou's discovery could yield discs the size of a small coin which are able to hold five hours worth of video.

Chou uses electrons to cut the pits on a CD, which is how the data is stored.

The only problem is that, to read the data, it needs an atomic-force microscope with a tip a few atoms wide - a rare instrument found in only a few labs.

Chou predicts it will be a decade before his device makes it to a wider audience. - © The Telegraph, London
