FRESH IDEAS
How to look past the sell-by dateKEEPING up with computer technology is becoming more difficult simply because there are more choices - and it's making consumers frustrated, says a Johannesburg retailer.Businessland managing director Karen Steinberg says computer choices and options change almost weekly, leaving people unsure about what to buy, how long it will last, the technologies to use and the amount of processing power necessary. In the past these were decisions that could be taken annually, but faster product cycles mean decisions do not hold for as long. "In terms of new top-of-the-range PC technology, look for the latest Pentium II processor, which is ideal for home users, if you can afford the price. "Ideally, it should have 32MB of RAM, which translates to a faster-running PC. "A 15-inch monitor, 3,5GB hard disk and 24x CD-ROM or DVD drive are good options, too. Remember that CD-ROM and DVD drives can both play regular audio CDs. Removable mass storage disks of 100MB are an easy way to back up data. "The system should include a data and fax modem, answering machine and speaker phone, with an information panel for easier use. "A video conferencing camera works well over phone lines, and is ideal for communicating with family or friends in other cities or countries." Steinberg says stereo speakers are standard, while a subwoofer is optional to get extra presence out of the latest games and reference works. "Users should also look for a microphone, volume control and mute option on their machines. "The mouse and keyboard are obviously standard, while the joystick comes with some models only." Typically, she says, Pentium II systems are bundled with Microsoft Windows, integrated software that includes a word processor and spreadsheet, personal finance software, a reference package such as an encyclopedia, fax software and Internet access tools.
