Wiese on the rise outshines the rest

CHRISTO Wiese, chairman of Pepgro and Orion Selections, was voted Businessman of the Year for 1997 by his peers in the business community.

Wiese was honoured at the Business Times Top 100 Companies banquet on Tuesday night.

At the same function, the Johannesburg-based manufacturer and importer of appliances and white goods, Nu-World Holdings, won the title of Top Company for 1997.

Wiese won the voting, which was conducted among the chief executives of last year's top 100 companies, pipping luminaries such as Meyer Kahn, Brian Gilbertson, Jeremy Ord and Cyril Ramaphosa.

Wiese's retail and banking interests have recently been consolidated to make him a leader in both arenas. The recent acquisition of OK Bazaars by Shoprite Checkers has created the largest retail group in the country while Wiese's Orion Selections banking empire brings together three of the SA's most dynamic financial institutions - NBS, Boland Band and BOE.

Nu-World's achievements and that of other top 10 companies in the BT table are detailed in our 36-page survey today. Top of page
