SA's best entrepreneur to take on the world
BUSINESS SAVVY
THE long wait is almost over - SA's top entrepreneur will be crowned on Thursday night at a gala affair in Gauteng. The national winner of our Entrepreneur of the Year Award will be chosen from the nine provincial winners. The top entrepreneur will jet off to Palm Springs, California, in November to compete as SA's entrant in the international competition. The nine finalists are: Tina Scholtz (North West Province) - she started a one-woman beauty salon in 1980; today, the Potchefstroom Akademie is the largest private beauty business in SA. Joseph Modise Mokgele (Free State) - working for himself was his goal and today his business, Modise Enterprises, includes a major Free State distribution channel. Pierre Markgraaf (Northern Cape) - Moto-Inn franchises are springing up around the country thanks to Markgraaf's decision to start using his selling skills in his own business. Piet Engelbrecht (Eastern Cape) - Maclear Maize Milling supplies to some big-name companies, and it all started after Engelbrecht bought an insolvent mill in 1993. Sisa Bikitsha (KwaZulu-Natal) - Mnandi Fast Foods controls nine outlets, but Bikitsha still remembers the days of being unemployed in Johannesburg. Michael van Straaten (Gauteng) - Verimark Holdings, the well-known direct-selling organisation, was founded 21 years ago on just R5 000. Michael Nunes (Northern Province) - if you're into chicken, you've probably eaten a bird from one of the Mike's Chicken poultry farms. Larry Katz (Western Cape) - Katz started out printing useful booklets for his fellow students. Today Studentwise includes a placement agency and magazines. Kestell Bezuidenhout (Mpumalanga) - from one tanker that supplied fuel to rural areas, Fuelking Tankers now delivers nation-wide and into neighbouring states.
