DAEWOO DEADLINE Korean industrial giant Daewoo would decide over the next two months whether to locate a $50-million motor assembly plant in Port Elizabeth or in Rosslyn near Pretoria, Daewoo officials told a delegation from the Port Elizabeth municipality in Seoul this week.

The delegation hopes the plant, which could produce up to 20 000 units a year and employ as many as 900 people, will be located in the Eastern Cape once government has agreed to back the Coega project there.

MANUFACTURING RISES The manufacturing sector is showing early signs of recovery. According to CSS statistics, production improved 2.3% in the second quarter compared with the first quarter of the year and by 3.8% on the second quarter of 1996. Sales of manufacturers increased in the second quarter by 3.5% on the first quarter and by 10.2% on the same quarter a year ago.

CALL-BACK COMEBACK Callback operators are considering legal action against the SA Telecommunications Regulatory Authority after the regulator decided this week to ban telephone callback operations with effect from September 1.
