OFFSHORE ALERT Talk has it that one of the first investors to send money offshore after the July 1 exchange control relaxation, received a phone call from the Revenue Service recently. Their query: "Where did the R200 000 invested offshore come from, because according to the balance sheet submitted with your last provisional tax return, you don't own sufficient funds!"

DIY ANALYSIS From next month you can easily take care of those nagging "what if" questions concerning investment risk on offshore assets. This week, riskview.com - a free web site - was launched by Dow Jones, publishers of the Wall Street Journal, Infinity Financial Technology and IBM. The web site is a tool to monitor total returns on global equities or indices, evaluate personal portfolios and perform risk scenarios. The data includes the Dow Jones Global Indexes.

NEW MARKETS Local investors can venture forth into the emerging economies of Latin America, Eastern Europe and Asia, through Southern International's new Global Emerging Markets Equities Fund. The high returns from emerging markets go hand in hand with volatility and therefore investments should be for a minimum of five years.

EASY WILLS You can download a copy of our simple wills (featured last week and in this week's issue on P21) from our website: www.btimes.co.za.
