Transnet article premature, unfairIT WAS with great disappointment to read such a speculative article ("Transnet fails to stop the bleeding," May 25 1997) on Transnet's financial performance for the financial year not yet finalised, 1996/97. Publication of incorrect information, as a result of negligence or irresponsible reporting, could result in Transnet suffering considerable damage. The view of this office is such that Transnet can no longer afford to take this, and similar such incidents, lightly. We, however, realise that an expectation of us being nonchalant about such issues may have been created. It is with this understanding that we are prepared, this time, to be less robust than we should be in our approach to such matters and direct this honourable gentlemen to the actual official date of the release of these results, which will be August. We believe that he will still be able to publish as sensational an article, hopefully with the capability and accuracy expected of a newspaper and a reporter of such integrity. In our humble belief, the financial status of Transnet can only be accurately checked against this office, irrespective of the source. I trust that this now clarifies our position and will hopefully avoid any future misunderstanding. - GLORIA TOMATOE SEROBE, executive director, finance, Transnet ý Business Times stands by its report.
