In touch with the outside world

THE SA cellphone industry will undergo significant changes and growth in the medium term to bring it in line with trends noted in more mature markets.

These trends, as highlighted at the recent Global System for Mobile Communication World Congress in Cannes, include a higher degree of competition, either through the introduction of new technology or the release of new products.

Emphasis is also expected to shift from technological supremacy to communications solutions as companies start to provide unique software developments and tailor-made products for specific customer groups.

"Examples of this last trend already emerging locally include the introduction of the pre-paid package as well as various tariff options like the Weekender ," says Jeremy Forword, managing director of Vodac.

The key to this new environment and the platform on which the battle for market share will be fought in future is the consumer's increasing desire for "freedom in communication".

"A product already in development which underscores this trend is the dual-mode handset which is expected to be launched by year-end. This will give users access to both GSM digital and foreign analogue networks like those in the US with the flick of a switch on one handset and will open up new countries for international roaming," says Forword.
