Tracking system gives hijackers no place to hideTHE surge in South Africa of vehicle theft, hijacking and crime has created a huge demand for an effective remote tracking and monitoring system with national coverage. CelTron Tracking Systems this week launched one of the most advanced, flexible methods of vehicle tracking and management in South Africa - the CelTrack Vehicle Management System, or VMS, which offers a comprehensive tracking system wherever cellular coverage exists and, beyond that, using the Tracker system linked to the police. "The main objective for CelTrack was to design a package that is flexible, easy to use and reliable, enabling the user full control over vehicle protection and monitoring," says Steve Joubert, managing director of CelTrack. "The power of the technology designed and applied by us has allowed the company to satisfy around 95% of the requirements set by the trucking industry, the insurance industry and the SA police," he says. The new VMS is essentially a fixed mobile car cellular telephone integrated with a global positioning system (GPS) as well as management software with onboard intelligence to accept co-ordinates, parameters and "self-alarm" capabilities. By co-ordinating its position from satellite information gathered through the GPS, the unit installed in a vehicle is able to establish if it is within the framework of the parameters set and downloaded to the VMS unit. Should the parameters be violated in any way, the VMS unit will instantaneously download the relevant information to a proprietary computer system maintained by CelTrack. An alarm is raised on the computer system while a map indicating the exact position of the vehicle is displayed on the computer screen. The communication line between the vehicle fitted with VMS and the control centre is kept open and the VMS will update its position at three to five second intervals. If the violation indicates an emergency (hijacking or theft) the reaction force will be mobilised. These parameters could be applied to a specific vehicle, a selected group of vehicles or the entire fleet. "Our product is aimed at the transport industry with the application of the technology aimed at business and corporate environments that want to restrict the risk of losses to their vehicles and loads transported; ensure the safety of drivers and passengers and enhance management control of fleet vehicles," says Joubert.
