Coca-Cola set to pour hundreds of millions into SA

THE $20-billion-a-year Coca-Cola Company is set to announce new investments in South Africa totalling several hundred million rand this week. Coca-Cola president Doug Ivester will announce details of the expansion plans tomorrow. It is the latest move by Coca-Cola to assert its leadership in the R6-billion annual soft-drink market and double SA sales over the next five years.

Stals upbeat about rand strength

RESERVE Bank governor Chris Stals said on Friday the rand's current strength could continue for another few months after its average weighted value rose 2% in January. "The relative strength of the rand could continue for another few months. What we are looking for is a more stable exchange rate," he said from Davos, Switzerland, where he is attending the World Economic Forum.

Government wants to cap lottery fortunes

THE government is looking at ways of capping the profits of a national lottery following public criticism of huge lottery earnings in the UK. "There is a feeling that capping profits is important, but the lottery must remain commercially viable for its operator. This is to avoid controversies sparked by the UK lottery, run by Camelot," a highly placed source said.
