HEALTH CARE

By JULIE WALKER

CARL GRILLENBERGER, outgoing chairman of National Hospital Network, has publicly criticised Southern Healthcare JV and Sanlam Health for appointing "house" groups as their preferred health-care providers.

NHN came about last year when various independent hospitals and day clinics positioned themselves to provide managed health-care services. It has developed into the largest private hospital network in South Africa and says it is the most cost-effective.

"Statistics clearly show that NHN facilities render their services much more cost-effectively than do competing networks," says Grillenberger. "We were astounded that Southern Healthcare JV and Sanlam Health had appointed Clinic Holdings and Apex (Afrox and Mediclinic) as their preferred provider networks.

Grillenberger cannot foresee that these organisations will be in any position to curtail healthcare costs in 1997. " We believe that these contracts were concluded because of Southern's and Sanlam's substantial shareholdings in Clinic Holdings and Mediclinic."

This is a favouring a much bigger child with R100-million or more.

Kathy Walstead-Plumb, chief executive officer of Southern Health Care, says it is impossible to say which is the most cost effective. Sanlam said the only solution was to break the real enemy - medical hyperinflation.
