Help to invent a new future

S'thembiso Msomi

AWARD-winning inventor Gervan Lubbe has come out of early retirement - at the age of 31 - and formed a new organisation to promote SA inventions and investors.

The former Telkom technician, who became one of SA's most successful entrepreneurs after inventing a machine to alleviate pain from arthritis in 1992, has launched African Flame Resources, which will encourage economic upliftment through inventions.

Lubbe says he decided to return to business after thousands of people wrote to him asking for tips on promoting their inventions.

"There are many South Africans with brilliant ideas, but they don't know how to commercialise their products. We need to turn these ideas into profitable ventures if we are to have job creation in SA," says Lubbe.

African Flame has forged links with 17 companies in various economic spheres to assist would-be inventors.

It is working on more than 20 projects and has already opened more than 80 agencies in the Free State, Eastern Cape and Northern Cape.

The company has created 16 cultural villages to encourage rural communities to handcraft goods for sale overseas.

"Rural people are very talented artists, but they lack knowledge of what is needed by foreign markets. Through the villages we will encourage them to manufacture furniture for export purposes," he says.
