KNOCK-ON EFFECT The shutdown of Volkswagen's Uitenhage plant in the Eastern Cape this week because of a wildcat strike has dealt a crippling blow to suppliers of vehicle components, writes PREGA GOVENDER . The sole supplier of seats to Volkswagen, Johnson Controls Automotive, was forced to put its 250 workers on short time after VWSA closed its plant on Monday. Johnson general manager Bryan Gray said his company had lost R1.5-million a day since the strike began. "When Volkswagen stops work, we stop."
Gray said his company would have to retrench about 60% of its workforce if VWSA lost its lucrative export contract of Golf 4s.
HYUNDAI MAINTENANCE Liquidators of Hyundai Motor Distributors and the Hyundai Motor Company of Korea are expected to make an announcement tomorrow regarding a new distributor to take over the sale, service and maintenance of Hyundai vehicles in SA, writes DON ROBERTSON .
Details of what will happen to the liquidated Motor Company of Botswana, which manufactures the cars, and Hyundai Motor Distributors Botswana, which handles distribution from Gaberone to SA, could take longer.
MTN SHORTLISTED SA cellular operator MTN was shortlisted together with six other bidders to tender for one of Nigeria's four GSM mobile licences. MTN has licences in Swaziland, Rwanda and Tanzania, writes MBONISO SIGONYELA .
